Cycling in the Lusterfjord area

Romantic roads alongside the fiord, where you can avoid heavy traffic and strenuous hills.

Or climb the highest mountain pass in Norway!

Despite the fact that the fiord area is dominated by dramatic mountain scenery, it still offers many oppor-tunities for cycling enthusiasts. Make the experience of the natural and cultural landscape at close hand.

Recommended daytrips:

A. Around the Lusterfjord

Nes Gard - Skjolden - Urnes - Solvorn - Nes Gard.

Ferry from Urnes to Solvorn. 75 km.

Spectacular scenery with high mountains on one side and the Lusterfjord on the other side. You  pass picturesque villages and romantic out-of-the-way communities.

Attractions along the route:

- Feigumfossen waterfall, one of the highest waterfalls in Scandinavia, with a vertical drop of 218 m. Along a marked trail, you can walk to the foot of the waterfall. Highly recommended.

- Munthehuset - The Munthe Villa, has an interesting history dating back hundreds of years . Major burial sites dating from 400 AD witness  economic power here in the late Iron Age. From 1830 the Munthe Villa became a popular centre for the young Norwegian artist.

The magnificent scenery was the attraction.

- Urnes Stavechurch was built early in the 12th century, and is the oldest of 30 stave churches left in Norway. The church is listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List of international cultural treasures.

- Galleri Walaker. In the beautiful fiord parish of Solvorn, an art gallery is located in a converted  barn, built in 1882.

B. Through a canyon, along the lake Veitastrondvatnet.

The route goes through a narrow valley along a lake, and here you get the feeling of passing through a wild canyon. To avoid the new tunnels, the old road is restored for cycling. After 30 km the valley get wider, and you will find one of the most remote villages of Norway, a small parish with a store and café. The production of goat cheese is the main source of income of the village.

You may go on to Tungestølen, a tourist cabin   10 km from Veitastrond. The main attraction here is the three glacier falls, the Loke, Odin and Tor. "The finest ice-scenery of Europe", said the English mountain climber William Cecil Slingsby. To get a view of these glaciers, you follow a marked trail for 1 ½  hours from Tungestølen.
